We are thrilled to announce that "Black Box Diaries," a feature-length documentary filmed and produced by our company, has been selected for the International Feature Documentary Competition at the 41st Sundance Film Festival. This prestigious festival, known for showcasing independent films in the United States, will host the world premiere of our documentary.
The Sundance Film Festival is one of the most prestigious and the largest independent film festivals in the United States. Many Academy Award-winning films have premiered here, including “The Sessions” (2012), “Minari” (2020), and “Coda: Ai no Uta” (2021). The festival has also been instrumental in discovering renowned filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino, Damien Chazelle ("La La Land"), and Ryan Coogler ("Black Panther").
Out of 17,435 submissions from 153 countries, "Black Box Diaries" was selected for the World Documentary Competition. This marks only the second time in Japanese cinema history that a documentary has been chosen for this competition, making it a historic achievement.
"Black Box Diaries" is an unprecedented documentary by journalist Shiori Ito, documenting her investigation into the sexual assault she experienced. This international co-production with the United Kingdom and the United States took six years to complete.
The film has received high praise from major industry publications such as Variety, the LA Times, and Rolling Stone for "capturing a pivotal moment in Japanese history that reshaped the nation's narrative, while also shedding light on the country's justice system and social conditions."
Following its premiere, we received numerous offers for distribution rights from film companies worldwide. The film is scheduled for theatrical release in the U.S. this fall, with continued screenings at international film festivals.
